Caste census meet triggered raids: RJD

RJD has alleged that CBI‘s raid on residences of Lalu Prasad‘s family was BJP-led Centre’s nervous response to ‘growing proximity’ between RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, on holding a caste census. JDU, however, refuted the charge.

Senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari said that he hoped Kumar would stand firm on his resolve to call an all-party meeting on caste census despite ‘BJP and RSS efforts to avert’ it. “Aren’t CBI raids at Rabri Devi’s residence and other places related to Lalu Prasad a warning to Nitish Kumar? The growing closeness between Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav on the issue of caste census is making BJP uncomfortable.

The timing of the raid points in this direction,” Tiwari alleged in a statement issued on Friday. RSS was opposed to the census as it would give empirical data on castes, he alleged. “This information can raise a strong and legitimate demand for equitable distribution of resources among those deprived. To fulfil RSS’ objective, CBI, has suddenly woke up! The allegation has been public knowledge for 15-20 years…raids have been conducted after Nitish ji announced two days ago that he would call an all-party meeting on caste census,” Tewari said. “The world is watching how BJP uses central investigative agencies to achieve its political objectives,” he said.

“This talk of closeness with Nitish ji is an attempt by RJD to create a perception,” JDU minister Ashok Choudhary told media persons in Patna. “Nitish Kumar’s commitment is for caste census but RJD is trying to portray that caste census would happen because of its pressure.” Chowdhary said that when Tejashwi Yadav met Kumar recently, the CM mentioned that things were in process and soon an all-party meeting would be called for the purpose. “Questions were raised on the recruitments during Prasad’s tenure.

CBI must have found preliminary evidence to go ahead in the case,” Chowdhary said. BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said that it was Shivanand Tiwari and JDU president Lalan Singh who in 2008 met PM Manmohan Singh and alleged corruption in recruitment. “Nitish Kumar committed a mistake once and went with RJD. He is not going to repeat his mistake and will never join hands with Lalu Prasad and his family,” Modi told ET. “The Lalu family had amassed 141 plots, more than 30 flats, and more than six houses by corruption,” he alleged.
